South Korea Box Office: 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Reigns Over Long Weekend
The Marvel franchise has earned more than $55.4 million to become one of the highest-grossing Hollywood imports in the country's box-office history.
Avengers: Age of Ultron continued to hog the South Korean box office during the long holiday weekend of April 30-May 3, accounting for 73.1 percent of total revenue.
According to Walt Disney Company Korea, South Korea so far leads the $1.5 billion international revenue for the film with a cumulative $55.4 million.
The film had virtually monopolized local theaters during its opening weekend, and ticket sales were fueled by the fact that Friday and Tuesday were national holidays here (Labor Day and Children’s Day, respectively). Many Koreans took Monday off to enjoy a five-day break.
In terms of admissions, by which local industry watchers usually measure a film’s box-office performance in Korea, the Joss Whedon actioner has garnered more than 8 million admissions as of Tuesday. This makes the Marvel film the fourth-biggest imported title ever to reach the milestone, after Avatar, Iron Man 3, Frozen and Interstellar. Onlookers expect the film to cross 10 million admissions, or roughly a fifth of the entire Korean population, in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the star-studded Korean thriller Coin Locker Girl made a decent debut in the race with Avengers. The film, distributed by CGV Arthouse, grabbed 13.5 percent of the weekend’s ticket sales to earn a total of $4.68 million, according to the Korean Film Council's KOBIS database. The crime drama set in Korea’s Chinatown will have its international premiere during Cannes Critics' Week later this month.
Enemies In-Law, another newly released local film, came in third and took 4.6 percent of ticket sales. The Lotte Entertainment movie is the sequel to the 2011 family comedy Meet the In-Laws.
In time for Children’s Day, two animation films followed in the fourth and fifth places. Dino Time, a Korean-U.S. co-production by CJ Entertainment, accounted for 4.6 percent of ticket sales, while Oops! Noah Is Gone, handled by Daou Tech, reached 2.1 percent.
