Spain to Offer Two Fiestas del Cine in 2014

The initiative offers deep discounts on movie admissions for three days to draw Spaniards back into theaters.

MADRID – The Spanish film industry’s top brass once again joined forces to present the 6th edition of the Fiesta del Cine, to run from March 31 to April 2. This year, organizers also announced that there will be two of the popular fiestas -- one in the spring and one in the fall -- that attract moviegoers back to theaters.

The initiative, which attracted more than 1.5 million moviegoers last year when it was held in October, offers moviegoers the chance to buy deeply discounted admissions and see all the films in theaters during the three-day project.

This year, each ticket will be sold for €2.90 (about $4) and be available at the box office, online or in automatic tellers at the 336 participating theaters -- offering 2,945 screens or 95 percent of the market. Participants need only register beforehand and show identification.

Spanish box office plunged 15 percent in 2013, but 2014 is already looking brighter. Last weekend’s sleeper Spanish Affair wowed audiences and earned a startling $3,900,000 its first week in theaters -- topping Mr. Peabody & Sherman in its second week and 300: Rise of an Empire, also in its second week.

Those films, as well as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Monuments Men, The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Book Thief  are some of the titles that will be in theaters during the spring edition of Spain’s fiesta. 

Producers Federation FAPAE general manager Fabia Buenaventura, Distributors Federation FEDICINE president Estela Artacho, Exhibitors Federation president Juan Ramon Gomez Fabra, and the head of the Culture Ministry’s Film Institute, Susana de la Sierra, were all present for the announcement Thursday.

“The spirit of collaboration is especially important in moments of adversity,” De la Sierra said. “We’re going in a specific direction, supporting not just film, but the entire chain of value of filmmaking.”
