Spanish Film Academy Honors 25 Personalities in Madrid Walk of Fame

Pedro Almodovar, Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem among the first to receive a star.

MADRID - Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Pedro Almodovar and Alejandro Amenabar were four of Spain's star system honored with a sidewalk plaque on Madrid's Walk of Fame, which was inaugurated Monday.

Spain's film academy named 25 honorees--16 actors and nine directors-- for the initial ceremony, timed to coincide with its 25th anniversary.  The academy said it plans to add one or two of the granite, marble and steel plaques each year.

"I am very grateful and honored to receive this star," Antonio Banderas said in a message sent to the film academy.

But Cruz, Bardem, Almodovar and Amenabar were all smiles as they unveiled their respective stars on the street in central Madrid where a cluster of art-house movie theaters and film book stores attract cinema fans.

In April, Cruz received the 2,436th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the first Spanish actress to receive the honor.
