'Spectacular Now' to 'Divergent': Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley Go From Lovers to Enemies (Video)

The duo can be seen in James Ponsoldt's teen drama, out Aug. 2, as well as the highly anticipated film adaptation of Veronica Roth's novel.

One year ago, Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley were headed to Georgia to begin filming James Ponsoldt's latest indie, The Spectacular Now.

Now, the duo is promoting their teen drama while teetering on the edge of stardom: They both have a highly anticipated, big budget YA adaptation on the horizon.

Teller clearly had Divergent on the brain during The Spectacular Now's recent press junket, letting out a Freudian slip of sorts while talking about a prom scene in the latter.

"I like the prom scene too because I think for your character," he looks at Woodley, "It's such a divergent -- diversion from … " Woodley laughs. "I thought you looked really cute in your prom dress," he eventually spits out.

But you can't blame him. Speaking with reporters all day -- and having just returned from Comic-Con -- Teller had clearly been asked about Divergent enough times to drive anyone mad.

Woodley and Teller's roles in each project could not be more different. In Spectacular Now, Teller plays a hard-partying teen that refuses to grow up, and Woodley plays a shy girl with few friends but a bright future. Cut to Divergent: Woodley is the tough-as-nails heroine, Tris, who must fight her way through initiation into a new faction of daredevils in a dystopian future, while Teller plays Peter, a fellow initiate who will stop at nothing to prove his superiority and does everything in his power to hurt Tris.

Asked about transitioning from love birds to mortal enemies on screen, Teller plays up the duo's real-life friendship.

"I knew I'd be comfortable doing any kind of stuff with Shailene," he says. "And they told me I got to beat her up … [I] started doing some pushups."

"Plus one for him!" Woodley chimes in.

But anyone who worries that Woodley's sugary-sweet demeanor in real life could mean a watered-down version of Tris: fear not. The 21-year-old "carries the torch" on Divergent, gushes Teller.

"Shailene was right there when we were doing the boot camp," he says. "The chin ups, the push ups, the gun work. Shailene was the leader on that."

The Spectacular Now debuted earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. It was acquired by A24 and will be released theatrically on Aug. 2. The film also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kyle Chandler, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brie Larson and Bob Odenkirk.

Divergent, from Twilight studio Summit, is due to hit theaters on March 21, 2014.
