Spoiler Alert: Daniel Day-Lewis to Wear a Domenico Vacca Tuxedo to the Oscars
Italian-born designer Domenico Vacca has made two tuxedos for Mr. Lincoln to wear to the Oscars: one black and one navy blue.
It's the Fort Knox of secrets for female nominees: No one can know who makes their Oscar dress until the second that jewel-strewn pump hits the red carpet. Even the designers themselves don't know their dress is "the chosen one" until they watch the arrivals on TV.
The men, on the other hand, aren't quite as shy about spilling the beans regarding their tux for the big night.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that surefire winner Daniel Day-Lewis will be dressed by Italian-born, New York-based haberdasher/designer Domenico Vacca on Oscar night. Recently, he visited Vacca at his Manhattan studio.
"I spent time talking about our sartorial, handmade clothes," said Vacca. "Fits, fabrics and an art that only few of us still pursue in clothesmaking. Daniel understands quality hand-tailoring and fabrics in clothing, and it is an honor to dress such an amazing actor for the Oscars."
Vacca is creating two tuxedos for Day-Lewis, one black and one navy blue, for the actor to decide on during a final fitting in Los Angeles. Both tuxedos are single-breasted and feature a shawl collar in grosgrain, which is the classic Italian sartorial tradition, instead of satin. The shirt is a simple design and features Vacca's signature high collar.
Vacca also will dress Argo nominee Alan Arkin, who will wear a single-breasted, peak-lapel black tuxedo. The actor donned a Vacca-made penguin suit when he won best supporting actor for Little Miss Sunshine in 2007. So perhaps the designer is his sartorial lucky charm.
After all, Vacca tuxedos have indeed brought luck for several Oscar winners: Arkin, singer Melissa Etheridge, who took home the best song award in 1997, and Forest Whitaker, who snagged the best actor statuette in 2006. Mickey Rourke, Jeremy Piven and Dustin Hoffman are also among his well-known clientele.
Meanwhile, we hear Gucci has made two tuxes for Oscar host Seth MacFarlane, and they also are dressing their fragrance face Chris Evans, who will be presenting with the rest of The Avengers cast.
