Sportsnet Pacts With HBO Sports and NHL on '24/7' Reality Series


The Canadian sports broadcaster is to air a behind-the-scenes series about the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs ahead of a Winter Classic match-up on Jan. 1, 2014.

TORONTO -- Canada's Rogers Media is pacting with HBO Sports and the NHL to jointly produce a reality series involving the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings leading up to their New Year's Day match-up at the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.

The series will debut on HBO on Dec. 14, before kicking off on Rogers Media's Sportsnet channel a day later on Dec. 15.

The NHL and HBO earlier collaborated on the HBO show Broad Street Bullies and the Emmy award-winning 24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic program.

The latest cycle will see Sportsnet air HBO's 24/7 reality series north of the border.

"Red Wings-Maple Leafs will provide no shortage of great stories and having Sportsnet as our first partner in Canada will make this year’s edition bigger than ever," NHL COO John Collins said Thursday in a statement.

The 24/7 reality franchise follows two NHL clubs simultaneously, providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access as they prepare for a showdown.

Toronto and Detroit will meet in the sixth edition of the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 1, 2014, to be played outdoors at the University of Michigan football stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
