SPTI takes anime channel to Spain

LONDON -- Sony Pictures Television International on Thursday said that it is going live with Japanese anime channel Animax in Spain beginning April 12.

The channel will initially be available to more than 500,000 subscribers through IPTV operator Imagenio, part of Telefonica Espana.

SPTI said it is "in advanced negotiations" with other key pay TV operators to carry the channel.

The announcement was made by Ross Hair, senior vp international networks at SPTI.

Animax currently airs 24 hours a day in 41 million homes across 49 countries, offering a mix of anime programming covering several genres such as action, sci-fi, comedy, drama and romance and is primarily targeted at teens and young adults in the 15-to-35-year-old group.

The arrival of Animax completes the lineup of SPTI channels in Spain, with free-to-air SET en VEO (Sony Entertainment Television) airing since September 2006 and pay TV channel AXN airing since November 1998.
