After Kubrick kept the film out of circulation for decades, Kino Lorber is set to release a restored version on home video in October.

Kino Lorber announced Monday that it will release Stanley Kubrick’s Fear and Desire on Blu-ray and DVD for the very first time. Working from a restoration mounted by the Library of Congress, the home video distributor scheduled the release of Kubrick’s debut feature on October 23, 2012.

Shortly after the release of Fear and Desire in 1953, Kubrick personally took the film out of public circulation and prohibited it from being released on any home video format. After the filmmaker’s death in 1999, repertory houses across the country sporadically hosted screenings of the film, including a showing in September 2010 at Los Angeles’ Egyptian Theater, where star Paul Mazursky participated in a q&a afterward. Turner Classic Movies broadcast the film on television for the first time in December 2011.

The release offers Kubrick fans their first-ever opportunity to see the filmmaker’s debut, in a restored, high-definition format. More details on the release are forthcoming including presentation format and bonus content.
