Star, 'Rings' producer ready Indian epic

NEW DELHI -- News Corp.'s Star TV will air a special series based on the Indian epic "Mahabharata," produced by film producer Bobby Bedi and "Lord of the Rings" producer Barrie Osborne, it was announced Thursday.

A release date is being finalized for the series, which will be directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi.

The epic was first shot for television in 1988 produced by veteran filmmaker B.R. Chopra and aired on statecaster Doordarshan, setting viewership records.

While a production budget was not given, the new "Mahabharata" will be shot in high-definition and incorporate animation and visual effects.

"Sometimes it is worth retelling a story just because it is now technologically possible to tell it better," Bedi said.
