'Star Trek: Discovery': See the Transformation From Human to Klingon
THR's new series takes fans behind the scenes of 'Star Trek: Discovery.'
In the long-running world of Star Trek, which includes 13 feature films and 31 seasons of television, there’s one thing that they all have in common: Klingons. The extraterrestrial humanoid warrior species has been taken up a notch with the latest installment of the franchise, Star Trek: Discovery, with new weapons, expanded language and an even more terrifying look.
The process of becoming a Klingon is a detailed one. Having a team of talented special F/X artists is key, including Glenn Hetrick, head of prosthetic and special effects makeup, who brought the concept of a 3D printer to create the prosthetic set that actors like Mary Chieffo wear.
“Glenn has brought the game up with 3D printing and I think it’s another layer of things that just makes the end product look amazing,” said James MacKinnon, who works on the show's prosthetics.
Finally, stepping into the body armor and slipping on the Klingon hands complete the process of transforming from Earthling to alien.
