Star TV holds Golden Horse reins

HONG KONG -- The 44th annual Golden Horse Awards ceremony, held in Taiwan, will be produced this year by Star TV's Cantonese- and Mandarin-language channel, Star Chinese Movies.

Star Chinese Movies also holds the official broadcast rights to the Dec. 8 event, held at the Taipei Arena.

The awards are the most prestigious in Asia for Chinese-language cinema, covering categories modeled after those for the Oscars.

Star Chinese Movies holds the TV rights to 80% of upcoming Chinese titles through its exclusive output deals with all the major Hong Kong studios. It broadcasts to more than 6 million homes in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines, and boasts a back library of more than 600 titles.

Last year's awards saw the best feature title go to Johnnie To's "Exiled," with Peter Chan winning best director for "Perhaps Love."

Star TV is a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.
