STAR TV takes '5th Grader' for India

NEW DELHI -- News Corp.'s STAR TV India has taken the wraps off an Indian version of the Mark Burnett-produced game show "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?"

Produced by Synergy Adlabs, whose credits include the Indian version of "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire," "Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain?" will be hosted by Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan and offer the winning contestant $1.3 million.

Synergy's version of "Millionaire" also aired on the STAR Plus Hindi entertainment channel.

"5th Grader" features adult contestants being tested on questions from fifth grade textbooks. The show is expected to air by April.

"I was very keen to do this show because of the educational aspect attached to it, which has been an integral part of our culture," Khan said in a statement.

The show debuted in the U.S. last year and has since been launched in 50 countries. The rights for India were handled by Bulldog Media & Entertainment, a company that specializes in the worldwide acquisition and development of intellectual property rights in the television market.

Said Mumbai-based STAR India CEO Uday Shankar: "We are fortunate that the country has always given the mandate of taking television to the next level to STAR TV. With this show, it's time to redefine Indian television yet again."
