Stars Skip Pins at Independent Spirit Awards
Saving their activism for the Oscars, perhaps?
Awards season's hottest accessories — pins representing causes like Time's Up, the ACLU or GLAAD — were noticeably absent at Saturday afternoon's Independent Spirit Awards.
Of the stars, such as Margot Robbie, Allison Janney and Saoirse Ronan, who hit the blue carpet in Santa Monica, only Zoey Deutch was spotted wearing a pin. The actress added the black-and-white Time's Up badge to her off-the-shoulder Dior ensemble, which she styled with a glam high pony.
The afternoon show is much more casual than the rest of awards season's high-profile events (Timothee Chalamet's divisive Off-White "gas station attendant" top is proof of the lax vibe), so it makes sense that stars would want to save their activism for tomorrow's big day: the Oscars.
Guests heading to Sunday's show are expected to show their support for both Time's Up as well as Everytown for Gun Safety by adorning their finest black-tie looks with the appropriate pins. Chalamet and Janney are also expected to sport red ribbon pins for the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.
At last year's show, blue ACLU ribbons and GLAAD's ampersand pins were the most prevalent. In 2015, stars (such as Helen Mirren and George Clooney) showed support for Charlie Hebdo with buttons reading "Je Suis Charlie." Only time will tell if guests also choose to bring activists as their red carpet plus-ones, as many did at the Golden Globes. Stay tuned.
