Lupita Nyong'o, Saoirse Ronan and Awkwafina carried the trend on their shoulders.

As the stars took on Camp at the 2019 Met Gala, a number of trends began to emerge. While embellished tights (seen on Naomi Campbell and Yara Shahidi), daring cutouts (à la Zoë Kravitz, Emily Ratajkowski and Hailey Bieber) and wings (worn by Billy Porter and Jordan Roth) had moments, one of the boldest to materialize was the strong shoulder.

Confidently leaning into the craze were Florence Welch, Saoirse Ronan, Awkwafina, Janet Mock, Natasha Lyonne, Kris Jenner and Lupita Nyong’o, who wore adornments with sequins, feathers and tulle on their sleeves.

Taking the sequined route was Welch, who wore a custom Gucci, dégradé cape that featured 3D blue birds whose wings were embellished with dazzling crystals, pearls and sequins. Also wearing Gucci was Ronan; the Golden Globe winning actress stunned in a fiery red sequined dress with eye-popping gold dragons that breathed camp into her ensemble.

Representing in metallic was Mock (styled by Jason Bolden), who shimmered in a custom Alberta Ferretti gown that featured ruffled gray feathers to match her sweeping train. Following suit, Awkwafina wore a Fall 2019 Altuzarra dress that featured pom-pom sleeves, elegantly framing her face. She dazzled with bling-embellished eyelids and yellow eyeshadow.

Russian Doll star Lyonne tried on an architectural look with a white and navy jumpsuit by Jean Paul Gaultier. Styled by Cristina Ehrlich, the pointy sleeves added Lyonne to the group of trendsetters. Although using a softer approach with tulle, Jenner took on triangular shoulders by wearing a fluffy powder blue overcoat by Tommy Hilfiger and navy jumpsuit with a plunging neckline.

Perhaps the strongest shoulder of them all was Nyong’o, who arrived to the red carpet channeling Marie Antoinette in Versace. With slivers of neon green, sky blue and hot pink hues that created a rainbow aesthetic, Nyong'o donned far-reaching butterfly wings (which extended to the top of her coif to below her waist) and tulle that helped her nail the "camp" theme. The Us actress finished her look by accessorizing her star-patterned dress with candy-colored jewels.
