The company, which also released director Alain Guiraudie's last film, 'Stranger by the Lake,' picks up the competition title.

Strand Releasing has acquired all North American rights for Alain Guiraudie’s new film Staying Vertical, which bowed Thursday in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

Strand also released Guiraudie’s previous feature, Stranger by the Lake. An early 2017 theatrical release is planned for Staying Vertical.

Written and directed by Guiraudie and starring Damien Bonnard, the pic is a dark comedy about a filmmaker who finds himself in a series of unexpected sexual situations. Staying Vertical was produced by Sylvie Pilat and Benoit Quainon.

The deal was done between Strand’s Marcus Hu and Jon Gerrans and Wild Bunch’s Carole Baraton and Olivier Barbier.

“We’re thrilled to be handling Alain’s latest film," Hu said. "Alain’s unique and personal vision is a great addition to this year’s main competition, and he’s definitely an auteur that we love.”
