Stephen Colbert Apologizes to Eric Trump, Jokes "We Always Thought You Were the Dumb One"

"We were wrong," joked the 'Late Show' host on Tuesday's show.

The Late Show host Stephen Colbert took a moment during Tuesday's show to speak to President Donald Trump's sons.

"At this point I would like to issue a formal apology," said Colbert, following the news that Donald Trump Jr. shared emails proving that he was told the Russian government had "incriminating" information for him about Hillary Clinton.

"I'd like to apologize to Eric Trump," continued Colbert. "We always thought you were the dumb one. We were wrong."

The emails, tweeted by Trump Jr. along with his publicist Rob Goldstone, show that Trump Jr. had corresponded with a contact in the Russian government who assured him he had damaging information. Trump Jr.'s response: "If it's what you say I love it."

President Trump applauded his son's "transparency" after the fact and assured the public that Trump Jr. is "a high-quality person."

"You know who else couldn't believe that Don Jr. published these emails this morning?" asked Colbert. "The journalists who have been trying to dig them up for months."

Colbert referred to one reporter, who tweeted that he had been working on the story for a year "and ... he just ... tweeted it out."

"That's right, fake news," Colbert said in his best Donald Trump impression. "You got scooped by Donny Jr."
