Stephen Colbert Corrects Donald Trump's Emmys Ratings Tweet
"That's right. We had the second worst ratings of all time," Colbert said. "In your face."
Stephen Colbert won't tolerate any fake news from President Donald Trump.
While Colbert hosted the Emmys on Sunday, the talk-show host joked about Trump's obsession with ratings. "Of course, what really matters to Donald Trump is ratings. You've got to have the big numbers. And I certainly hope we achieved that tonight," he said during his monologue.
Trump took to Twitter on Tuesday to address the awards show. The president tweeted that he was "saddened" by the show's low ratings and that they were the "worst ever."
I was saddened to see how bad the ratings were on the Emmys last night - the worst ever. Smartest people of them all are the "DEPLORABLES."— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 20, 2017
Colbert set the record straight on Wednesday's Late Show, referencing Sean Spicer's controversial appearance on the show in the process.
"I swear I heard someone at the Emmys say they were the highest rated ever," he said. (Spicer addressed his Emmys appearance and responded to the backlash it received, revealing that Trump thought Spicer "did a great job," in an interview that aired on Thursday's Good Morning America.)
"I do want to point out that every single part of that tweet was factually incorrect," Colbert added. The first inaccuracy is that the awards ceremony did not take place on Monday as Trump suggested in his tweet but actually the night before. "I checked the TV schedule, and he must have been watching NCIS: New Orleans," Colbert joked.
The late-night host then fact-checked Trump's claims that the 2017 Emmys were the worst rated. According to the Nielsen ratings, this year's Emmys had 11.4 million viewers, which is 100,000 more than the lowest rated Emmys of all time in 2016. "That's right. We had the second worst ratings of all time," Colbert told a cheering audience. "In your face."
The segment ended with Colbert and his audience chanting, "We suck less!"
