Stephen Root lands two film roles

Actor cast in 'Everybody Loves Whales,' 'Red State'

Fresh off appearances in two movies that screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, Stephen Root has nabbed two roles.

Root has been cast in the Universal drama "Everybody Loves Whales" and Kevin Smith's horror film "Red State." In "Whales," which stars Drew Barrymore, Kristen Bell and John Krasinski, Root will play Gov. Haskell, who is based on a real person. His role in "Red State," which stars Dermot Mulroney and Melissa Leo, was undisclosed.

Both films shoot this fall.

Repped by Gersh and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, Root next will appear in the Fox Searchlight comedy "Cedar Rapids," and he has a voice role in Gore Verbinski's animated film "Rango," which Paramount opens in March.

Root appeared in "The Conspirator" and "Everything Must Go" at Toronto.
