Steve Coogan's Baby Cow to Adapt Zadie Smith's 'Swing Time' for TV
It is the company's first major acquisition since Christine Langan, the former head of BBC Films, took over as CEO.
Baby Cow, the film and TV production company co-founded by Steve Coogan that was behind the likes of Philomena, said Thursday it has acquired Zadie Smith's novel Swing Time to adapt it for television.
Smith will adapt it herself with Nick Laird, the company said.
Swing Time, published this week, marks Baby Cow’s first major acquisition since Christine Langan, the former head of BBC Films, took over as CEO this month.
“Zadie Smith is the voice of a generation, and Swing Time is a thrillingly ambitious story of friendship, rivalry and fame," Said Langan. "We’re delighted and honored at Baby Cow to be developing such a unique project and we can’t wait to share it with TV audiences everywhere.”

Swing Time, which focuses on two girls who dream of being dancers with only one having talent, is described as "a story about friendship, music and true identity, how they shape us and how we can survive them. Moving from North West London to West Africa, it is an exuberant dance to the rhythm of time."
Smith's other novels include White Teeth, The Autograph Man and NW.
