Stewart heads New Year Honors list
EmptyLONDON -- Veteran British singer Rod Stewart was among the music industry stalwarts feted in the Queen's New Year Honors list.
Stewart was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the list, published Dec. 30, for services to music.
Meanwhile, jazz pianist and composer George Shearing was knighted for services to music.
CBEs were bestowed to pianist Imogen Cooper and composer/conductor John Rutter. There were MBEs for Scottish singer/songwriter Archie Fisher for services to traditional Scottish music, and for English folk singer Shirley Collins.
Composer and conductor Guy Woolfenden was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, while percussionist Evelyn Glennie was appointed Dame Evelyn in recognition of her contribution to music.
The Queen hands out the accolades to individuals each year to reward excellence across the various sectors of British culture.
