StudioCanal Mines China's 'Black Coal' For U.K. Release
The Berlin Golden Bear winner is currently playing at the London Film Festival
This year’s Berlin Golden Bear winner, Chinese thriller Black Coal, Thin Ice, has been picked up by StudioCanal for the U.K.
The movie joins a raft of StudioCanal pics playing at this year’s BFI London Film Festival, which ends Oct. 19, including festival opener The Imitation Game.
The U.K. rights to Black Coal — written and directed by Diao Yinan and with investment from Eminem, 50 Cent and Timbaland — were acquired from Fortissimo Films.
The Hong Kong and Amsterdam-based company also sold fellow BFI London Film Festival titles Theeb to Cinemien for the Benelux territories in Europe and Megacom for ex-Yugoslavia, while Love Is Strange went to Edko Films for Hong Kong and Filmware for Taiwan.
Love Is Strange will be released in the U.K. by Altitude Pictures early next year. Theeb picked up the Orizzonti Best Director award at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
A release date in the U.K. for Black Coal has yet to be announced.
