STX Entertainment to Distribute Golden Globes in China (Exclusive)

The company will work with Chinese partners to provide live terrestrial and streaming video airings, along with producing red carpet coverage hosted by Chinese stars and distributing the Golden Globes 75th Anniversary Special.

Bob Simonds' STX Entertainment has picked up the exclusive China distribution rights to the 75th Golden Globe Awards telecast in January.

As part of a deal inked with Dick Clark Productions and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, STX will work with Chinese partners on live terrestrial and streaming-video broadcasts, making the awards show available to viewers across the Middle Kingdom.

STX Entertainment's digital division, STXdigital, meanwhile, will produce a new Chinese-language pre-show from the Globes' red carpet starring Chinese celebrity hosts. STXdigital also is handling the exclusive local rights to the Golden Globes 75th Anniversary Special.

In 2017, the Globes attracted over 20 million viewers in the U.S. and 60 million viewers worldwide. And the event has a growing following in China, where prestigious awards tend to command special reverence, and where the local entertainment market continues to boom. In recent years, the Globes usually have been carried by state broadcaster CCTV6 or Hunan TV.

In late 2016, the Globes nearly came under Chinese control when Beijing conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group announced a deal to buy Dick Clark Productions for $1 billion. Wanda ultimately scrapped the pact in March, however, under pressure from Chinese regulators.

STX is now stepping in to help build the Globes' connection with Chinese fans, while further establishing its own presence in the country's growing entertainment market.

STX, co-founded by Simonds and Bill McGlashan in 2014, has considerable ties to China. One of its largest shareholders is Beijing-based private equity firm Hony Capital; and most of the studio's film slate to date has been co-financed by Chinese company Huayi Brothers Media.

In October, STXfilms notched its first major film content win in the Middle Kingdom, collaborating with Jackie Chan's Sparekroll media on the co-production of The Foreigner. Starring Chan, the political thriller earned $81 million in China and $140 million worldwide. That followed reports in September that the studio was exploring plans to raise $500 million in an initial public offering on the Hong Kong stock exchange in early 2018.

The Golden Globe Awards will be held on Jan. 7.
