Katy Perry Ad Pulled at Behest of Animal Activists in Australia [WWD]
Katy Perry ruffled feathers in Australia while promoting the tour for her latest album, Witness, in partnership with the department store Myer. In the ad for the contest, in which the pop star is offering the chance to win one of 8,000 tickets to the Australian leg of her tour with any $120 transaction at the store, Perry playfully tells her dog, Nugget, "Let's go chase some koalas." Animal activists critiqued both Perry and Myer, noting that koalas are an endangered species and that dog attacks are one of the most prominent threats to their well-being. After social media backlash, Myer pulled the offending ad, and replaced it with an updated version (below) in which Perry says, "OK, Nugget. It's time to get you a puppy passport."
