Reese Witherspoon and Danai Gurira Speak at U.N. Women Panel [People]
Black Panther actress Danai Gurira and Reese Witherspoon made powerful statements today during a U.N. Women panel at the United Nations headquarters in New York in celebration of International Women’s Day. In tears, Gurira spoke about meeting female survivors of sexual abuse and harassment in Liberia, while Witherspoon got into the origins of the Time’s Up movement last October and her own sexual assault at age 16. She also thanked Elizabeth Arden for its $1 million pledge to the U.N. Women’s fund today and for creating a limited-edition lipstick for the cause — Witherspoon serves as that company’s “storyteller-in-chief.”
Elle Fanning, Camila Cabello and Aja Naomi King Cover Glamour’s April Issue [Glamour]
The April edition of Glamour magazine, dubbed The Beauty Issue, features actresses Elle Fanning and Aja Naomi King with singer Camila Cabello — all three are signed with L’Oreal Paris. Inside, the trio talks about what beauty means to them. Fanning challenges the outdated beauty ideals of straight hair and no glasses, as glamorized in The Princess Diaries. Cabello chats about her immigrant background (“I didn’t see myself represented in pop culture”), the beauty of imperfection versus “unrealistic images of girls” on social media, and her dislike of red lipstick. King gets into the need for more diversity in the entertainment industry and the power of embracing all types of beauty looks: “I love it when I see natural hair on TV, but I also love it when I see black women in straight hair. Or in wigs. Or in braids.”
"When you look at the cover with me, Aja, and Elle, you see different body shapes, different skin tones, different backgrounds. It just shows you that beauty looks like everybody, you know?" As @camila_cabello pointed out, beauty has many forms. For the cover of our April issue, we sat down with these remarkable women to talk about how our definitions of beauty are finally shifting, and what beauty means to them. LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton has marked International Women’s Day by signing on to the French task force on gender equality established by the World Economic Forum — a priority for French President Emmanuel Macron. LVMH board member and Berluti CEO Antoine Arnault noted that 73 percent of LVMH’s 145,000 employees are women and said that the efforts would “enhance competitiveness.” In 2013, LVMH signed the U.N. Women’s Empowerment Principles, making this the company’s second international commitment.
