Style Notes: Victoria Beckham's First Store; Wang's First Balenciaga Ad
Five fashionable reads to tempt your Tuesday.
As one of the legitimately credible celebrity fashion lines in the game (not to mention a red carpet staple of by Anne Hathaway, Gwyneth Paltrow and Carey Mulligan), it's about time that Victoria Beckham opens her first store. And she is — in London. "This is where I want to have my first store," Beckham said at the Vogue Festival at London's Royal Festival Hall this past weekend."I'd like to do something that is really new, really fresh. Something a little bit conceptual but not too much." The former pop singer didn't reveal many details about the upcoming retail plans, but stressed that her focus remains on her four children (her 10-year-old son Romeo appears in the latest Burberry campaign). Just as the former longtime designer Nicolas Ghesquiere finally voices why he left Balenciaga, the fashion house has unveiled an image from its first ad campaign with new creative director Alexander Wang. Shot by Steven Klein, the still features a black two-piece outfit on cult model Kristen McMenamy, whose face is hidden behind an open door to highlight the craft and texture of the clothing. Wang opted for a "very cinematic portrayal" of the fall/winter 2013 collection, which debuted in Paris back in February to critical acclaim. "With lots of emotion,” he added, “in contrast to the austerity bestowed in the show." The ad campaign is set to splash the pages of June magazines and hover over Manhattan's new Balenciaga women’s store, slated to open SoHo in the fall. [WWD]
Carey Mulligan may be taking a '20s turn as of late. But she's graced the June issue of Harper's Bazaar UK free of the roaring fashion influences that practically dripped from her fingertips on the May issue of Vogue. Shot by Tom Allen and styled by Cathy Kasterine, the Gatsby damsel poses in a pink Prada ensemble that is more early-summer ethereal , less Jay Gatsby-style rager. Newsstand patrons can catch a glimpse of a slightly grinning Mulligan among cherry blossom branches, while subscribers will be treated to the actress laughing with her eyes closed in a black-and-white shot. Fairytales do come true: model Kendra Spears is engaged to Prince Rahim Aga Khan, the eldest son of His Highness Aga Khan, the global community leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. A familiar face during since her September 2008 New York Fashion Week debut -- she has walked the runways of Chanel, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Giorgio Armani and appeared in campaigns for Prada and Calvin Klein -- Spears is likely to convert to Islam before the religious wedding ceremony, and it is thought she will take on the title of Princess.
