Superchannel, Maple ink output deal

TORONTO -- Upstart Canadian pay TV channel Superchannel on Friday unveiled an output deal with Canadian distributor Maple Pictures.

Toronto-based Maple, which releases Lionsgate titles in Canada, will supply Superchannel with a range of films and TV series, including the features "Saw 3," "Death of a President" and "The U.S. vs. John Lennon."

The Maple Pictures agreement comes a day after Superchannel signed a deal with NBC Universal to air daytime soap "Passions" beginning this fall.

"Passions" formerly aired on Global Television. The migration to Canadian pay TV mirrors a similar move stateside in which NBC shifted the day-time soap to DirecTV.

Superchannel is set to launch nationwide in October, providing first-time premium pay TV competition to the Movie Network in eastern Canada and Movie Central in western Canada.
