Supporting Actors Worst Audition: Jussie Smollett and Josh Gad Sing 'Little Mermaid'

Kathryn Hahn, Timothy Simons and more reveal humiliating tales while on the audition trail.

Even successful actors have horrifying, embarrassing tales of a bad audition. During The Hollywood Reporter's Supporting Actor Emmy Roundtable event, stars revealed the humiliating audition circumstances their careers have placed them in.

"I was playing it up really big, and in the end the casting director was like, 'You do realize this is an hour drama?' And I said, 'No … I did not know that,'" recalled The League's Stephen Rannazzisi of his worst audition, when he humiliated himself while reading with Jeff Goldblum.

Kathryn Hahn (Happyish) foolishly brought a box of props with her while auditioning for a Coen brothers movie, and Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project) talked about the Quiznos commercial he lost and pined over for years.

Amy Brenneman (The Leftovers) explained that anything for a commercial is usually pretty terrible, saying things like, "This is why I like the Whopper!" or, "When I have heavy flow days …"

Timothy Simons' (Veep) story may have taken the cake, though, recalling how he pronounced "orangutan" as "organtuan" during an audition, prompting Amanda Peet (Togetherness) to reel, "That's the worst story I’ve ever heard!"
