Surf's up for Martinez biopic

Participant Prods. is teaming with State Street Pictures to bring the story of professional surfer Bobby Martinez to the big screen.

State Street's Bob Teitel and George Tillman will produce the biopic about Martinez, who was the first Mexican-American to make the world surfing tour. Robert Munic is penning the screenplay.

The coming-of-age story will follow the rise of Martinez from the gang-ridden streets of Southern California to the professional world of surfing, where his accomplishments led to his hero status.

Nate Moore, Participant's director of production, will oversee the project.

Rene Rigal, State Street vp development and production, who first learned of Martinez's story from a newspaper article, will serve as associate producer.

Participant was one of the production companies behind such films as "An Inconvenient Truth" and "Syriana." Its upcoming films include "The Kite Runner" and "Charlie Wilson's War."

Films produced by State Street Pictures include "Roll Bounce" and "Men of Honor."
