Susan Boyle tops YouTube views in '09

'Britain's Got Talent' debut was watched 120 mil times

LONDON -- More than 120 million viewers worldwide watched Susan Boyle's "Britain's Got Talent" debut on YouTube, making the clip the most-watched online video of 2009, it was announced Wednesday.

The Scottish spinster's performance of "Les Miserables" hit "I Dreamed a Dream" on the Simon Cowell-fronted hit ITV1 show became a viral hit on the online video platform, garnering fans from as far afield as the U.S., Argentina and Ukraine.

It proved far and away the most successful video clip of the year on YouTube, beating "David After Dentist" -- featuring a 7-year-old talking in the car after a having a tooth out -- which got 37 million views and "JK Wedding Entrance Dance" which logged 33 million.

But despite its global success, ITV failed to monetize the clip, having failed to sign a content agreement with YouTube that would give it a share in any advertising revenue.

The event proved an embarrassment for ITV executive chairman Michael Grade, who had previously dismissed YouTube's parent Google as a "parasite" that fed off the content of others.
