Taiwan film's star skinny dips in celebration

'Cape No. 7' hits $3.2 mil; first local pic to top b.o. in years

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Total boxoffice for Wei Te-Sheng's "Cape No. 7" has topped the TWD100 million ($3.2 million) mark, resulting in lead actor Fan Yi Chen fulfilling a promise to swim naked at a beach where much of the film was shot.

"This is my own way to celebrate the success of the movie," said Fan, who attracted a large crowd of spectators and media Thursday.

The romantic comedy is the first Taiwanese production to top local boxoffice rankings in six years. Delving into Taiwan's history as a former Japanese colony, "Cape" surpassed sales of "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" and "Mamma Mia!" on Sept. 6.

The Motion Picture & Drama Association of Taiwan nominated the film this month to join the foreign-language Oscar race.

As part of Fan's skinny dip, he was made to fetch a golden, Oscar-like statue from the water.
