Taiwan's Catchplay Co-Finances New Regency Titles 'Assassin's Creed', 'Splinter Cell' and 'The Revenant'
The company will co-invest and co-distribute in China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
Taiwan's independent film distributor Catchplay has inked a multi-picture deal with U.S.'s New Regency to co-invest and co-distribute in the latter's productions The Revenant, Assassin's Creed, and Splinter Cell.
The Revenant, directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, is now in production and set to be released by 20th Century Fox in the U.S. in December 2015.
Assassin's Creed stars Michael Fassbender and is directed by Justin Kurzel, while Splinter Cell stars Tom Hardy and is directed by Doug Liman. Both films are adapted from the blockbuster Ubisoft video games and will begin principle photography in 2015.
The partnership between Catchplay and New Regency is to be managed through an SPV, set up by Alpha Pictures Hong Kong in an agreement with New Regency to establish a framework for long-term co-financing and co-distribution partnerships with China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Besides co-financing, Catchplay will also distribute these films in Taiwan.
"Adding the three New Regency films to our slate has definitely strengthened Catchplay's distribution lineup for 2016 onwards. But more importantly, we value the long-term partnership framework, as it allows us to participate, learn from experience and hopefully witness the success of these great projects, not just in the Greater Chinese markets, but throughout the world." said Daphne Yang, Catchplay Executive Director, who negotiated the deal.
Last year, Catchplay invested in two Mandarin-language films. The first one was Paradise in Service, directed by Doze Niu, which was selected in the Panorama program of upcoming Berlin International Film Festival and was also the opening film of the Busan International Film Festival in 2014.
The second one was 20, Once Again!, a remake of Miss Granny, the 2014 highest-grossing fantasy-comedy in South Korea and a co-production with South Korea's CJ Entertainment. 20, Once Again! has grossed $54 million in China since it opened on Jan. 8.
