Taiwan's VieShow buys 6 Imax screens

Installations due to be completed by June 2014

TORONTO --  Success screening digitally-remastered Hollywood releases on a super-sized Taipei screen has led Taiwan exhibitor VieShow Cinemas to order six more Imax theaters in that market.

Toronto-based Imax on Monday said VieShow will complete the latest installations of its digital projection technology by June 2014.

VieShow last January signed an earlier deal to install an Imax theater at its Sun Cinemas multiplex in Taipei.

VieShow and and other Asian exhibitors are embracing 3D cinema and other digital technology in a bid to woo cinema-goers to their cinema chains.

Besides the VieShow deals, Imax has booked multi-theater agreements with Chinese film studio Huayi Bros., Japanese chain Tokyu Recreation, and Australia's Hoyts Cinemas.
