'Taken 2' Easily Tops Home Entertainment Charts

Will there be a "Taken 3?" If so, producers of the smash-hit action franchise will need to pony up for star Liam Neeson in the wake of the surprise $49.5 million domestic bow by "Taken 2."

The No. 2 film, "The Possession," sold 11.7 percent as many copies as the Liam Neeson action movie.

Twentieth Century Home Entertainment captured the top spot on both national home video sales charts the week ending Jan. 20 with Taken 2, the sequel to the tense 2008 actioner about a retired CIA operative (Liam Neeson) who rescues his daughter from Albanian kidnappers. This time around, Neeson and his wife are taken hostage in Istanbul by the father of a kidnapper he killed in the original; both films were big successes at the box office, with the sequel grossing $139.7 million and the original $145 million.

Taken 2 easily captured the top spot on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

As of Jan. 6, Nielsen data now includes Walmart numbers.

The Lionsgate horror film The Possession, which earned $49.1 million in U.S. theaters, debuted at No. 2 on First Alert and No. 5 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. Nielsen data shows that The Possession sold just 11.7 percent as many copies as Taken 2, while on Blu-ray the gap is even wider (6.3 percent) – not surprising, given the difference in box-office earnings.

The previous week’s top-seller, Lionsgate’s Dredd, slipped to No. 5 on First Alert and No. 2 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart. On First Alert, Walt Disney’s Frankenweenie held fairly steady at No. 3, down from No. 2 the prior week, while Universal Studios’ Pitch Perfect rose back up a notch to No. 4 from No. 5 the prior week – even though it’s been in stores for more than a month.

On Home Media Magazine’s video-rental chart for the week, Pitch Perfect – in its first week of widespread rental availability – shot to No. 1 from No. 93 the previous week, bumping another Universal Studios release, Ted, to No. 2. With The Bourne Legacy at No. 3, Universal owns the top three spots on the rental chart for the week.
