Taubin off market list at Warners
EmptyDawn Taubin has been ousted as head of domestic film marketing at Warner Bros., but with three Warners films in the boxoffice top 10, the move is traceable only to a restructuring of theatrical operations on the Burbank lot.
Warners production president Jeff Robinov recently was elevated to head of the newly formed Warner Bros. Pictures Group. With Taubin and Robinov known to have cool relations, industry figures knew the restructuring would portend tough times for the marketing maven, who newly reported to Robinov instead of studio president and COO Alan Horn.
Insiders said no decision has been made on who will top marketing operations on the lot. Officially, Warners kept comment to a minimum.
"Due to the restructuring resulting from the recent founding of the Warner Bros. Pictures Group, Dawn Taubin has agreed to relinquish her role," Horn said Wednesday. "My professional relationship with Dawn has been one of the most satisfying in my 35 years in the entertainment industry. She is phenomenally smart, classy and has always been a consummate professional."
Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Barry Meyer called Taubin "a great marketing executive (and) terrific person."
Meyer added that the studio offered Taubin a nontheatrical senior marketing post, which she declined.
"I am very fortunate to have spent almost 20 years at Warner Bros. and to end my time here with our most successful year ever," Taubin said. "I am grateful to my team at Warner Bros. for their hard work and loyalty for so many years and to Barry and Alan for the wonderful opportunity they gave me and for their support and friendship."
Word of her departure spread rapidly through the exhibition community.
"I've known Dawn since our days at MGM and have worked with her on the 20 Warners/Imax movies we've handled," said Greg Foster, chairman and president of filmed entertainment at Imax. "I can't think of a smarter, more professional, kinder colleague than her."
Taubin was elevated to her most recent post in November 2001. She previously was executive vp marketing and came to the studio as vp publicity after a stint in publicity at MGM/UA.
