Televisa eyes Satmex purchase

MEXICO CITY -- Mexican broadcaster Televisa said Thursday that it is considering the purchase of Satmex, Latin America's leading satellite service provider.

"We are in the process of due diligence. We are learning about that business, about the synergies it would have with other business segments; however, we have not made any decision yet," Televisa executive vp Alfonso de Angoitia said in a call with analysts.

Should Televisa decide to make a bid for Satmex, it would allow the media outfit to reduce transmission costs while airing its content throughout the Americas via satellite. Mexico City-based Satmex provides broadcast, telecommunications and telephone services to dozens of countries throughout the Western Hemisphere.
