Televisa preps sat launch, reality series


MEXICO CITY -- Televisa is in final negotiations with Intelsat to launch a satellite that will provide high-def and backup services for Sky, its satcaster in Mexico and Central America, the Mexican media giant said Friday.

Televisa executive vp Alfonso de Angoitia told analysts on a conference call that the new satellite will be operating within two years if the companies sign the deal as expected. The broadcaster did not disclose financial details.

Innova, the Televisa-DirecTV Group joint venture operated under the Sky brand name, entered Costa Rica this year. It also is expanding its international reach into Nicaragua, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala.

In other company news, Televisa is set to bow a telenovela based on the popular musical reality "Buscando La Nueva Banda Timbiriche" (Looking for the New Timbiriche Group). For the new soap, Televisa plans to launch a multimedia marketing blitz as it did successfully with "Rebelde," a hit teen novela packaged with a spinoff pop group that became a huge phenomenon in the Spanish-speaking world.
