Telstra, Seven add up for Olympic 3G

SYDNEY- Australia’s largest telco, Telstra Corp., and broadcaster Seven Network have signed a multimillion-dollar agreement to stream Seven’s Olympics coverage to Telstra 3G mobile phone customers, the partners said Thursday.

The deal means Telstra becomes one of Australia’s four media partners for the Beijing Olympics, alongside Seven, the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) and Internet group Yahoo!7 and is reportedly worth AUS$9 million ($8.1 million).

Telstra has around 3.3 million 3G subscribers, of Australia’s total 20 million mobile phone users.

“Our Beijing coverage is our biggest undertaking since the Sydney 2000 Games and having it streamed on Telstra Next G mobiles adds an entirely new dimension,” Seven Media Group CEO David Leckie added.

Telstra is also a telecommunications partner of the Beijing Olympics and is working with Seven to provide the network’s high definition broadcast signals from China to Australia.
