Terrence Malick's 'Knight of Cups' to Premiere in Berlin

Malick's Palme d'Or winner "The Tree of Life" screens Oct. 8 and 12.

New films by Kenneth Branagh, Peter Greenaway and Andreas Dresen also in official line up

Knight of Cups, the new film from Tree of Life director Terrence Malick, starring Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, and Natalie Portman, will have its world premiere at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival.

The screening marks a return to Berlin for Malick, who won the Golden Bear in 1999 for The Thin Red Line.

Berlin announced its first pack of competition titles Monday, which include 45 Years from Brit director Andrew Haigh (Weekend) starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay; Peter Greenaway's Eisenstein in Guanajuato and As We Were Dreaming from acclaimed German director Andreas Dresen (Stopped on Track).

Kenneth Branagh's live action take on Cinderella, featuring Blanchett, Lily James, Stellan Skarsgard, Derek Jacobi and Helena Bonham Carter will also screen in Berlin in an out of competition slot. Branagh, whose recent helmer credits include Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and Marvel Studio's Thor, last visit to the Berlin fest was with his Shakespeare adaptation Love's Labour's Lost in 2000.

Other competition titles include Under Electric Clouds from Paper Soldier director Alexey German and Ixcanul Volcano, the debut feature from Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante.

Berlin will announce the remaining films in its line up in early January. Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky will be president of the competition jury in 2015. The 65th Berlinale runs Feb.5-15, 2015.
