Tessa Thompson, Melissa Leo Road Trip Comedy 'Furlough' Goes to IFC Films
Whoopi Goldberg, Anna Paquin, Edgar Ramirez and La La Anthony are also among the cast of the Laurie Collyer-helmed movie.
IFC Films has acquired U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to the road trip comedy Furlough, starring Tessa Thompson and Melissa Leo, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Directed by Laurie Collyer, the film stars Thompson as a woman who cares for her aging mother while working at a jail. She gets assigned to accompany a rowdy prisoner (Leo) on an emergency furlough to visit her dying mother, but the duo's trip goes haywire.
Whoopi Goldberg plays Thompson's onscreen mother, and Anna Paquin, Edgar Ramirez and La La Anthony are also among the cast of the completed movie.
Barry Strugatz wrote the script. Leo and DeerJen's Jen Gatien produced the pic, which was financed by Meridian Entertainment and EFC Films. EFC Films’ Carole Meiselman, Meridian’s Jennifer Dong and Figo Li and Symbolic Exchange’s James Schamus and Joe Pirro, and James W. Skotchdopole served as executive producers. Bankside Films is handling international sales.
Thompson most recently appeared in the hit Marvel threequel Thor: Ragnarok. Her upcoming movies include Alex Garland's drama Annihilation and Nia DaCosta's modern Western Little Woods, as well as Boots Riley's sci-fi comedy Sorry to Bother You, which is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. She is repped by Greene & Associates Talent Agency and Mosaic.
Leo most recently led the ensemble cast of Sony Classics' nun drama Novitiate. Her upcoming films include Antoine Fuqua's Equalizer sequel, John Swab's crime film Run With the Hunted and Chris D'Arienzo's musician movie Always on My Mind. She is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
The Furlough deal was negotiated by CAA with Arianna Bocco of IFC Films and Avy Eschenasy of Bankside.
