Theater agent legend Larry Dalzell dies aged 78
Retired agent repped famous names such as Ralph Fiennes, Ciaran Hinds and Michael Gambon.
LONDON – Theater agent Larry Dalzell has died aged 78 following heart surgery.
Dalzell’s long career as an agent began in 1962 when he joined the Denis van Thal agency in London after spending more than 20 years as an actor.
Over his long career Dalzell represented stars including Gwen Ffrangcon-Davis, Ralph Fiennes, Ciaran Hinds, Alec McCowan, Michael Gambon, Eileen Atkins, Jason Robards, Edith Macarthur, John Castle, George Hearn, Bernard Lloyd and many more.
He also developed an impressive list of directors and designers including Ronald Eyre, Peter Dews and David Walker.
Dalzell, who was born in Glasgow in 1933, worked as a child actor with the Citizens Theatre in the city before becoming a professional firstly with the Gateway Company in Edinburgh then touring extensively with the Wilson Barrett Company.
Four years after joining the Denis van Thal agency in 1962 Dalzell set up his own company Larry Dalzell Associates.
In 1998 he set up Dalzell and Beresford with Simon Beresford. Their current client list includes Lindsay Duncan, Richard Griffiths, Matthew Goode, Jamie Campbell Bower, Diana Rigg, Michael Ball, Elena Roger, Laura Michelle Kelly, John Castle, Sian Phillips, James Fox, Helen Lindsay, Tim Woodward, Jack Ryder, Scarlett Strallen, Sarah Brightman, Joseph Drake, Ben Mansfield and David and Hannah Yelland.
He retired from business in 2003 and lived in Brighton where he died Sunday.
There will be a private funeral followed by a memorial service in London later in the year.
