Third Mexican musician found dead

MEXICO CITY -- Another Mexican musician has turned up dead, making him the third recording artist who has been killed here in one week.

Authorities found trumpet player Jose Luis Aquino's body bound and beaten in the southern state of Oaxaca. He played for Los Conde, a popular regional band from Oaxaca.

Over the past year, a spate of killings has claimed the lives of numerous Mexican musicians. Authorities suspect some of the gangland-style slayings may be tied to drug cartels, while other slayings show evidence of crimes of passion. Several of the victims played in banda groups, northern regional music that often glorifies the lifestyle of drug traffickers.

Earlier this week, vocalist Sergio Gomez, of the grupero band K-Paz de la Sierra and singer Zayda Pena of the group Zayda y los Culpables were killed in separate incidents in northern Mexico.

Gomez and Valentin Elizalde, a popular singer killed last year, were nominated for posthumous Grammy Awards on Thursday.
