Thomas, Apelian launch Cinema One
EmptyLONDON -- Nigel Thomas and Lauri Apelian, the production duo behind London- and L.A.-based financier and co-production banner Matador Pictures, have teamed to launch Cinema One, a startup production label here.
Billed as a joint U.K. production initiative between Matador Pictures and Regent Capital, Cinema One will provide up to 30% of the budget for British projects with budgets up to £2 million ($3.9 million), the parties said.
Cinema One's aim is to produce up to five pictures in the next year and plans to set itself up as a collaborative home for producers to come to for financing.
Thomas and Apelian will serve as directors of Cinema One and the company will be based out of offices in London's West End.
Action-horror film "Outpost" will be the first production under the Cinema One umbrella and is set to shoot in Scotland this January as a collaboration with U.K.-based financier and sales house ContentFilm and Black Camel Pictures. ContentFilm will handle worldwide distribution.
Matador's credits include Ken Loach's "Ae Fond Kiss" and "Ten Minutes Older," a series of films by directors including Jim Jarmusch, Wim Wenders, Spike Lee, Chen Kaige, Werner Herzog, Aki Kaurismaki, Bernardo Bertolucci, Jean-Luc Goddard and Mike Figgis.
