Three's company for NBC, ABC pilots

Three modern witches and three nurses have entered the fall fray as ABC and NBC handed out pilot orders to the dramas "Eastwick" and "Mercy," respectively.

ABC's "Eastwick," from Warner Bros. Television, is loosely based on the 1987 feature "The Witches of Eastwick," which starred Cher, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jack Nicholson.

Penned by Maggie Friedman ("Jack & Bobby"), the project follows three women in the town of Eastwick who embark on lives with new powers after an enigmatic stranger comes to town.

NBC's "Mercy," from Universal Media Studios, is a drama with comedic elements. It revolves around three nurses bound in friendship by the highs and lows of their personal and professional lives.

Liz Heldens ("Friday Night Lights") wrote the script and will executive produce. Heldens' series credits also include "Dawson's Creek."

NBC is on the verge of a couple of other drama pilot pickups, with Dario Scardapane's medical drama "Trauma" said to be pending and a project from Jesse Alexander said to be very close. (partialdiff)
