T.I. on Confronting Kanye West Over Trump Tweets: We Have "Respect for One Another"
"I wanted to pick his brain, get his thoughts, so I could have a better understanding of where he was coming from and what he was attempting to say," he told The Hollywood Reporter.
When Kanye West unloaded his political views and strong support for President Trump on Twitter back in April, a lot of people turned their backs on the hip-hop mogul. But not T.I.
The Ant-Man and the Wasp actor sat down with The Hollywood Reporter In Studio to discuss his very real conversation with West about politics and how it turned into their collaboration "Ye Vs. the People."
"We have a high level of respect for one another and I think the conversation was had with a high level of respect and admiration on both sides, and we just wanted to share our views," he said. “I wanted to pick his brain, get his thoughts, so I could have a better understanding of where he was coming from and what he was attempting to say."
T.I. continued: "I wanted him to do the same for me and we did that successfully over a five-hour period, and at the end of it, we just decided it would be dope if we did a song that detailed the highlights of the conversation."
T.I. told THR that he didn’t expect West to release the song — which only took the two artists 45 minutes to create — to the world. "I never thought he’d put it out because of the blatant honesty, because I actually wanted to say things that I felt people walking the streets would say," the "Live Your Life" rapper said. "I wanted to give it a very organic feel."
He added: “I think it was extremely courageous of him to just put it out the next day regardless of the adverse opinion that it may receive from his fans.”
Watch the video above to hear T.I. also talk about how "surreal" it is to be a part of the Marvel Universe and working his new reality show The Grand Hustle.
Ant-Man and the Wasp is in theaters July 6.
