Excel this year also recruited Casey Close, the former CAA agent who represents Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees and Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies, to establish a baseball division. The firm’s other sports clients include such NBA players as Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks, Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers, Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics and Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Steinberg and Woods have been together for 12 years. Woods had been with IMG since he turned pro in 1996, but he elected to follow Steinberg out the door in May. Steinberg will be a partner at New York-based Excel.

“After meeting with a number of agencies and businesses, I decided Excel was the perfect fit," Steinberg said in a statement. “I’m excited to serve as a partner in an agency positioned for growth and look forward to working with Jeff [Schwartz, another Excel agent] and Casey to build this business. It's clear Excel is truly setting the bar for focused sports management while maintaining the access and service of bigger agencies."

Woods, whose earnings power has diminished in the wake of his problems with infidelity and injury, will miss this week’s British Open in England because of an ailing left knee and Achilles tendon injury.
