Time Magazine Includes Trump on Person of the Year Shortlist
The selection comes after the president claimed he turned down repeating as the magazine's top figure of 2017.
Time magazine may have surprised some people when it revealed the shortlist for its 2017 Person of the Year. The magazine included President Donald Trump on the list of candidates for the title despite Trump's claiming that he turned down the title.
Trump, who was named Person of the Year for 2016, recently claimed that the magazine informed him that he was “probably” going to be given the annual title for the second year in a row. The president added, via Twitter, that he “took a pass” on the title, claiming that Time told him he'd have to do an interview and photo shoot.
The magazine later responded with its own tweet, saying, “The President is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year. Time does not comment on our choice until publication, which is December 6."
Joining Trump on the list are a few of his recognizable adversaries, including North Korea leader Kim Jong-un, who, the president has nicknamed “Rocket Man,” and former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who famously launched a national protest against police brutality and racism by kneeling during the national anthem. President Trump criticized the move as a sign of disrespect to the country, only for hundreds of NFL players to kneel in protest of the president’s condemnation.
Special counsel Robert Mueller, who's leading an investigation into possible Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election, was also named to the shortlist. And in the wake of a wave of sexual harassment and assault claims in Hollywood, Time featured the #MeToo movement of women sharing their stories. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was mentioned as well.
Other candidates include Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia and the Dreamers, who are the surplus of undocumented immigrants brought to the country when they were children.
Time's Person of the Year recognizes a person or group of people who have had the most influence on the year’s news, for better or worse. The magazine will reveal its selection Dec. 6.
