Timothy Spall, Vanessa Redgrave to Star in L.S. Lowry Biopic
The film will tell the story of the famed English painter and his relationship with his overbearing mother.
Famed British artist L.S. Lowry is getting the biopic treatment, with two of the U.K.'s best-known names set to star.
BAFTA nominee Timothy Spall (Early Man, The Party, Mr. Turner) and Oscar winner Vanessa Redgrave (Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, Howards End) have been lined up to appear in Mrs. Lowry & Son, about the relationship of the Manchester painter — known for his images of urban, industrial scenes and matchstick men-like humans — and his overbearing mother, Elizabeth.
Spall will play L.S. Lowry with Redgrave starring as the bedridden and depressive Elizabeth, who would constantly attempt to dissuade her son from pursuing his artistic ambitions while never failing to remind him what a disappointment he is to her.
Lowry — who died in 1976 and now has a purpose-built art center named for him in Greater Manchester — worked as a rent collector but would take art classes in the evening and paint after his mother had fallen asleep.
Former Royal Shakespeare Company chief executive Adrian Noble is directing Mrs. Lowry & Son from a script by Martyn Hesford.
The Little Film Company is looking after international sales for the film, which is being produced by U.K. banner Genesius Pictures and Australia-based IPG Media.
