Tina Turner Bio-Musical Finds Its Star
Adrienne Warren, a Tony nominee in 2016 for 'Shuffle Along,' will play the title role in 'Tina,' world-premiering in London next spring.
Adrienne Warren has been confirmed for the title role in Tina, the upcoming Tina Turner bio-musical scheduled to open April 17 at London's Aldwych Theatre.
The role will mark the West End debut for Warren, who scored a Tony Award nomination in 2016 for her featured role in Shuffle Along, Or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed. She made her Broadway debut in 2012 in Bring It On: The Musical, and prior to that appeared in the national tour of Dreamgirls that began at Harlem's Apollo Theatre.
"Growing up watching Tina, I knew how to shake my hips before I could tie my shoes," said Warren. "I am elated, honored and humbled. Meeting and working with Tina is and will always be one of the great moments of my life."
"From the moment I met her at our last workshop I saw her exceptional talent," Turner said of Warren. "Playing this role will require immense physical and emotional commitment, and bravery, too."
Written by playwright Katori Hall (The Mountaintop) with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins, and featuring many of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's hits, Tina will be staged by Phyllida Lloyd, who had a global theatrical smash with Mamma Mia! and also directed the film version for Universal.
The show traces Turner's life from her humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee, through her stormy marriage to Ike Turner, her hard-won independence and her ultimate emergence to become one of the top-selling female recording artists of all time.
The musical is being produced by Stage Entertainment, Joop van den Ende and Tali Pelman, in association with Turner. Preview performances will start March 21, with additional casting to be announced.
