Tonys: 'Fiddler on the Roof' Lyricist Sheldon Harnick to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award (Exclusive)
Acclaimed director Marshall W. Mason also will be honored at the Beacon Theatre ceremony June 12.
Sheldon Harnick, who penned the iconic lyrics of Fiddler on the Roof and She Loves Me, will receive the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre, it was announced Tuesday.
Acclaimed director Marshall W. Mason — the founding artistic director of Circle Repertory Company and frequent collaborator of playwright Lanford Wilson, who won Tonys for staging his Fifth of July and Angels Fall — also will receive the award. The two will be honored at the Beacon Theatre ceremony in June.
“It is our pleasure to present two very deserving legends with Lifetime Achievement Awards for their extraordinary careers and countless achievements,” said Charlotte St. Martin, president of The Broadway League, and Heather Hitchens, president of the American Theatre Wing. “Mr. Harnick has crafted some of the most beautiful and recognizable scores in the theatrical repertoire that have spanned generations. Mr. Mason has gifted his ingenious visions to dozens of Broadway’s biggest hits. We are thrilled to play a part in their history with this honor.”
Well-received productions of both Fiddler on the Roof and She Loves Me are running on Broadway and will be likely contenders at the Tonys in the best musical revival race. Nominations in the competitive categories will be announced May 3.
The 2016 Tony Awards, hosted by James Corden, will air June 12 on CBS. The ceremony is presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.
