Top 2014 Christmas Ads Generated More Shares Than Top Super Bowl Spots

Ads for AMC Theatres, Kmart, Apple and even the Lowell, Michigan, police department are among the most-shared holiday commercials
The Super Bowl may be one of the biggest annual events for advertisers, with brands paying millions of dollars to get their elaborate ads seen by more than 100 million viewers. But when it comes to which ads are shared online, commercials for the December holiday season are winning that phase of the game.
Four of this year's US-centric holiday campaigns all have more shares than each of the top 10 most-shared 2014 Super Bowl ads, even though the latter commercials have been available for sharing for several more months, according to social video advertising platform Unruly, which has crunched the numbers on Super Bowl and Christmas ads. Moreover, in total, the top 10 U.S.-centric Christmas ad campaigns, ranked by shares, have 4.86 million shares, roughly a million more shares than all 10 of the most-shared 2014 Super Bowl ads, Unruly found.

Unruly notes that the difference in shares around the two events is due in part to longevity: people share holiday ads long before the holidays, but the Super Bowl is a 24-hour sprint. And the holiday season is a gift-giving time.
Unruly also notes that the holidays are more global whereas the Super Bowl primarily targets a U.S. audience. Indeed, the most shared 2014 Christmas ads globally include a number of U.K. campaigns.
